Why Do We Take Supplements?  What do we hope to gain from taking supplements?

People all around the world take supplements in hopes that the supplements can help them to improve their declining health.  Several reasons are given by the supplement and healthcare industry to convince the consumer that supplements are the answer for their health problems.  What is not spoken about is the fact that there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight.  If the supplements were helping people to correct their problems, wouldn’t there be an end in sight to taking them?  It seems that people have no problem accepting that they will have to take supplements indefinitely.  Most people believe that if they supplement then they do not have to focus so much on their diet to meet their body’s nutritional requirements.   So, what are the reasons that people take supplements?

  1. Filling that nutritional gap – we are taught by the mainstream that approximately 90% of people don’t receive enough nutrition from their diet alone due to a variety of reasons such as poor appetite, strict dieting, busy schedules, etc. so instead of teaching people how to eat healthy foods, the solution is to pop a pill instead.

  1. We are taught that “Nutrient Absorption” declines with age.  This is a half-truth in my opinion because yes, our ability to absorb nutrients can decline with age in fact, it does for the majority of people but not because of the fact that we are getting older or aging, its due to excess, or a backlog of wastes within that can cause poor nutrient absorption overtime.  It just so happens that poor nutrient absorption begins happening for most people in their later years which only makes sense when we’ve been eating less than ideal foods for a lifetime, eventually it will take its toll.

  1. Another reason given is that they say “exercise increases nutrient needs” which allows the supplement industry to market supplements to athletes and active people.  They say that as you exercise your body uses up the energy and nutrients that have been stored in your body and the optimal way to replenish these nutrients is by taking the recommended supplements such as protein powders.  Protein powders are marketed as a quick and easy way to get the calories instead of eating a large meal.  Half-truths are believable.  Yes our caloric needs may increase with exercise but this is no reason to eat powders or fractionated processed pills, it’s a reason to grab a melon or eat a large salad instead.

  1. Poor eating habits is another reason given for supplementation.  So instead of focussing on improving the diet and teaching people how to do so, the supplement industry has found the answer for these individuals.  They market supplements as a healthy replacement next to food to help prevent damage from poor eating habits which is a great marketing strategy in my opinion.  People then believe that they can continue to eat whatever they want, when they want, if they remember to take a multivitamin each day.
  2. Prevent expensive health issues!  This is another common reason that is given to people for supplementation.  Healthcare providers encourage people to attempt to prevent certain health issues before they happen.  Most people are convinced that if they take daily supplements, they may successfully prevent certain disease or deficiency issues from ever occurring in the first place! No wonder people are so confused, they are fed fairy tale lies and poisons.

  1. Soil depletion is one of the most popular reasons that convince people to reach for the supplements.  We are taught that modern farming techniques use fertilizers that deplete the soil and rob the plants of essential nutrients and therefore the foods that we are eating are depleted so we must supplement to compensate.  This reason really convinces people more than any other reason from what I’ve heard over the years.  I do not argue that the commercial farming practices are less than ideal, however, if the soils were truly that depleted, the plants would not grow and besides, wouldn’t the supplements be just as depleted if the soils and plants are?

The reasons that we are given for supplementation are convincing.  We are feared into what could happen to us if we choose not to supplement – yet we don’t often hear about the other side of the coin which is when supplements harm and lead to additional health issues.  In my opinion, taking supplements as a preventative is ludicrous.  It doesn’t make sense to try to prevent something that that we think could happen but might not happen. This type of thinking causes people to flood their bodies with excess while placing additional burden on the digestive. This type of thinking had Angelina Jolie publicly remove her breast to avoid possibly having to remove it in the future out of the fear of developing breast cancer like her mom.  Nobody has a crystal ball, not even the medical doctors which is why it is such a crime in my opinion to tell people what will probably happen to them if they choose not to take them up no their recommendations.

Supplements do not heal.  Nothing can heal the body but the body itself when the correct conditions are in place for it to heal.  Supplements burden the body and create excess waste within, and the excess waste can lead to further disease issues.  Taking a vitamin or a supplement overloads the body and burdens the body which works against the body.  Nothing is solved by taking supplements, at best the supplements suppress symptoms temporarily offering the illusion of something helpful.  There are no quick fixes, the reasons that someone may feel the need to supplement such as perceived deficiencies has a deeper root cause that must be addressed to heal such as malabsorption issues.  Fixing malabsorption issues in the body requires time and patience to heal as the body unloads excess wastes that are causing the malabsorption issues to be expressed by the body.  Vitamins and supplements are too concentrated which creates excess in the body.  We humans do not require large amounts of vitamins and minerals in concentrated forms.  We can easily meet our daily requirements from whole fruits and raw foods in their natural form which the body can actually absorb and utilize. We mistakenly believe that because the human body requires vitamins and minerals from whole foods that if we concentrate them and take more of them this is in some way better for our health.  This type of thinking has people in the health industry juicing 10 varieties of vegetables or drinking smoothies with as many ingredients as they can stuff into the blender or taking supplements.  We cannot make up for our mistakes in our diet by taking supplements instead, it just doesn’t work that way.  Taking supplements can contribute to high blood pressure or other health issues because taking anything foreign to the body causes an increased need for the elimination of toxic loads or cellular debris which can cause high blood pressure. The body only recognizes whole foods in their natural form as designed.  Attempting to drug away our symptoms does not build our health back.  Supplements are simply not useable by the body.  When we ingest isolates such as supplements / vitamins the body must interrupt its natural processes to deal with the immediate burden that daily supplementation places on the body.  All supplements are poison to the body and cause great harm.  We cannot create products to replace nature and we cannot escape the laws of nature or improve upon them.  The supplement industry gets to create a supplement for just about any symptom that the human body expresses which is a never-ending cash cow for them.

2.12 The Fallacy of Vitamin Supplementation

From the foregoing, it would appear logical to assume that the more vitamins we can take, the healthier we should become but, unfortunately, this is simply not true. We have a limited capacity to utilize and/or to store vitamins, as is true of food. When any substance, including vitamins, is introduced into the system in excess of present need, an unnecessary burden is immediately placed upon all the organs and systems. They cannot use the product. It is an obstructive influence in the body and therefore potentially harmful to it. The organic domain is placed in the position of having to cope with it in the least damaging manner.

The presence of any excess or foreign substance is immediately recognized. The danger-ahead alert is sent via the nervous transmitting mechanisms (the nervous system) to the control center in the brain where it is interpreted, evaluated and an appropriate response (instructions) sent out; or perhaps the alert may be relayed to a more locally placed substation (a plexus) for a sympathetic response.

If an obstructive foreign substance (for example, a vitamin overload due to dietary supplementation), cannot be stored or disposed of by temporarily or permanently “dumping” it somewhere in the body where it will not greatly interfere with normal systemic function but can be “tolerated,” then the body will instigate other measures to get it out of the system as fast as possible.

The usual route for such exodus is via the kidneys and when the kidneys are thus called upon for emergency service, they must necessarily work overtime. Vitamins, when taken in excess of actual body need, are handled in exactly the same fashion as any other unnecessary impediment. In the case of vitamins, the easiest and quickest way to get rid of existing excess is to incorporate it in the urine and send it out of the body via the bladder, making the urine a very expensive secretion, indeed!

In order to accomplish the “dumping” or the rapid exodus of any foreign or excess material, vitamins or other, the body is stimulated by the nervous response and shifts into “high gear,” stepping up the metabolic activity. The stimulation makes the vitamin-taker feel good, at least while he takes the vitamins, and it is for this reason that the need for this kind of stimulation can become habitual.

Why, you ask. It seems that a very delicate balance obtains among and between the secretions of the ductless glands, the hormones, the vitamins and the enzymes; especially with the millions of enzymes which are directly concerned at the cellular level with the multitudinous activities comprising the life process. You see, once inside your body the vitamins take their proper place in a tremendously complicated scheme of life about which we actually know very little. They do not just work alone but they require other factors for them to be effective at all, factors like fats, minerals, hormones and so on. Only too soon the body becomes accustomed to their stimulating presence and when deprived of it, can sink to an unexpected and quickly felt lower level of well- being as attends all drug withdrawal.

We are only becoming more informed in this area of concern through microbiological studies. We really know very little about life within the cell. But what we do know strongly suggests that the indiscriminate taking of vitamins could and perhaps does disturb delicate internal nutritive balance resulting in metabolic confusion, a confusion which disrupts and diminishes efficiency of performance. Health is reduced commensurate to the imbalance.

Some vitamins, like the enzymes, are found in just about every living cell, plant or animal. Not all Vitamins, however, are required by all animals but it does seem to be a requirement of life that the vitamins required by a particular kind of organism must be present at all times, each to play its own specific role as to time and place within that organic community. This is true, also, of man but, as we have noted, the vitamin role is secondary rather than primary, that of assistant, not instigator”.
