What is detoxification?

Let’s begin with the definition…

There are plenty of definitions online, most of them describing detoxification as a “set of interventions”, or substances given to the body to cause detoxification.

Mainstream Wikipedias definition is as follows:

Detoxification or detoxication (detox for short)[1] is the physiological or medicinal removal of toxicsubstances from a living organism, including the human body, which is mainly carried out by the liver”. – there was additional text that I didn’t include.

I wanted to clarify what this word detoxification means from a Terrain Model Standpoint because if you search online, the conflicting definitions can lead to confusion.

In my own words, Detoxification can be described as a natural function carried out by the body, it’s something that the body is always doing to various degrees through the utilization of it’s elimination channels to clean and expel wastes (skin, bowels, urine, breath, uterus), depending on the individual’s state of health, and daily dietary / lifestyle choices.

I would love to hear anyone else’s definition/interpretation because we can always learn from each other. 

The body is always cleaning and detoxing itself to the best of its ability. 

People tend to believe that detoxification is something that is entirely within our control, and that it’s something that we can force the body into doing by using a particular herb or substance.  This is where the natural healing world differs from the Natural Hygienic teachings.  

Detox is not something that we are in control of, and it’s not something that we do to our body.

That being said, we can expect heavier detoxification events of the body to occur at some point, especially when we are finally providing the body with the correct diet / lifestyle conditions.  

When the body is no longer overburdened with excess, and receives adequate digestive rest, chances are that the body may eliminate excess internal waste more rapidly and noticeably via cold and flu like symptoms for example.

But there’s a difference that I wanted to discuss between the body eliminating newly created wastes & just trying to keep up (for lack of a better explanation) and the body finally eliminating older, stored wastes from within.

The only way to truly know is to know thyself which requires individual examination of one’s current diet / lifestyle choices.  

If you’ve been eating a fairly clean diet (raw fruits, greens, vegetables) devoid of foods that place heavy burden on the digestive system which are acid/mucus forming, then it’s safe to say that the body is detoxifying itself of past wastes because you are no longer ingesting foods that lead to internal accumulations of waste.

However, if we are eating foods that build & lead to internal waste accumulation, and then elimination / detoxification symptoms begin, it is more than likely that the body is overburdened and “just trying to keep up”, through the elimination of excess waste associated with your current diet.

I realize that I am only primarily addressing diet here as the reason for noticeable detoxification of the body to occur, however, if we are exposed to toxic chemicals, sprays, substances, etc., the body may also initiate a detox/cleaning event. And as I already mentioned, the body is always cleaning itself, we just do not always notice, or pay attention unless the body is doing heavier cleaning that requires downtime or additional effort to carry out daily duties. 

It’s unfortunate that there are many health/healing groups out there where those involved are putting in the dietary work and effort in hopes of forcing their body into detoxification – yet they do not realize that because they are ingesting many different herbs, substances and tincture mixtures that their body is likely “just trying to keep up” by eliminating the excess poisonous wastes associated with the use of the herbs and “natural” substances that they are ingesting.  

The only way to truly clean the body in a safe and natural way is to simply supply the body with it’s true dietary / lifestyle requirements so that the body can heal and correct itself in its own time, and this time is different for each individual depending on a list of factors from age, past diet, internal health condition, etc. We provide the correct conditions and the intelligent body will do the rest, we just need to get out of the way and “Do Nothing Intelligently”!

What to Expect During Detox

“It is not uncommon to experience many side effects during detoxification. These include cold and flu-like symptoms, changes in bowel movements, pains of various types, fevers, heartburn, lung congestion, energy loss, swelling and itching, and even vomiting. In this section we will examine each of these possible side effects. Sometimes we will suggest ways to help the cleansing process along, or ways to alleviate the discomfort of this “healing crisis” as it is called. In general, we encourage you to continue on through these side effects in the direction of regeneration.

COLD AND FLU-LIKE SYMPTOMS

As the body begins to clean its lymphatic system, the sinus cavities, lungs and most other body tissues will become active in the cleansing process. Do not stop this natural process. This is the only true way to increase the function of your cells and to start your body on the path to regeneration.

You will begin to see a lot of mucus being discharged from the body. This mucus can be clear, yellow, green, and even brown or black. Occasionally you might find blood in the mucus. Don’t panic. This blood has been there a while. Congestion is acidic and can cause inflammation and bleeding of tissue. The throat can get very sore. This is just mucus and toxins in the tissues trying to get out. It is best not to use cough drops”…

There is much more to the chapter but I just wanted to share that one section.

I often hear people say in a condescending manner that we people in the health community just say that EVERYTHING is DETOX! And in a sense that is true, all these unwanted symptoms that occur (unless we physically injure ourselves) are detox because the body is always working for us, (no matter how healthy or damaged the body is) to the best of its ability.  The body is always seeking a healthy state, or balance which is why we become sick, it’s the bodies attempts with healing.

There’s no reason to fear detoxification, in a sense, if you can look at it in this way, detox is a chance to celebrate (quietly) and to rest.  When the body has initiated a cleaning event, it requires our nerve energy and the best course of action is to rest & drink water in order to allow the body to go through its processes unimpeded.
